Vanadium Ion Battery Goes Into Full Operation at Hanyang University in Seoul

Vanadium Ion Battery Goes Into Full Operation at Hanyang University in Seoul South Korea is putting another vanadium based energy storage technology into a real world operating environment. Standard Energy has installed a vanadium ion battery energy storage system at Hanyang University’s Seoul campus, where it has entered full operation after passing its pre use inspection.

The system forms part of a national energy technology project focused on developing and demonstrating a community energy management system. It will operate alongside solar generation, fuel cells and water electrolysis infrastructure to help reduce peak electricity demand and stabilize power quality. Standard Energy reports energy efficiency of at least 97 percent, with high power performance enabling as many as four charge and discharge cycles per hour.

Why it matters

This is not a conventional vanadium redox flow battery. Standard Energy is commercializing a different aqueous vanadium ion architecture aimed at stationary energy storage applications requiring safety, rapid response and frequent cycling. The Hanyang installation is particularly interesting because it is operating on a heavily occupied urban campus in central Seoul. That environment puts a premium on fire safety.

It is also the company’s second vanadium ion battery ESS installation in central Seoul, following an earlier deployment supporting ultrafast EV charging.

The VanadiumBank Perspective

Vanadium’s opportunity in energy storage is expanding beyond a single battery architecture. Technologies capable of exploiting vanadium’s electrochemical characteristics while delivering high safety, long operating life and intensive cycling could expand the addressable market for vanadium based storage.

The underlying trend is increasingly clear: vanadium is evolving from primarily an alloying metal into an energy storage material with multiple technology pathways.
